HC orders B’desh Govt to formulate guidelines to prevent unnecessary caesarean operation

The High Court in Dhaka on Sunday directed Bangladesh government to set up a committee to formulate a guideline to prevent unnecessary caesarean operation at private and public hospitals.

The committee is to be formed within one month and it will submit its report within six months. A massive increase in caesarian operation has been reported from Bangladesh in recent years. Between 2016 and 2018, number of such operations increased by more than 50 percent.

According to World Health Organisation and UNICEF reports in 2018, 77 per cent of the caesarean operations performed in Bangladesh were unnecessary.

In 2018, close to 8.60 lakh  unnecessary caesarian operations took place in Bangladesh while 3 lakh mothers who were in need of caesarian operation could not avail the opportunity of the life-saving procedure.

Unnecessary caesarean operation puts mothers and babies at risk, increasing the likelihood of infection, excessive bleeding, organ damage and blood clots apart from the economic costs of longer hospitalization.
