44th anniversary of Emergency: BJP leaders term it the dark period in Indian history

Today is the 44th anniversary of the Emergency. The then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had imposed emergency on the midnight of 25th of June in 1975.

BJP today attacked Congress on Emergency terming it a dark period in Indian history.

In a tweet, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, India salutes all those greats who fiercely and fearlessly resisted the emergency. PM said, the country’s democratic ethos successfully prevailed over an authoritarian mindset.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said, the declaration of emergency and the incidents that followed, mark as one of the darkest chapters in India’s history. Defence Minister said, on this day, people of the country should always remember the importance of upholding the integrity of our institutions and the Constitution. 

BJP MP Meenakshi Lekhi said Constitution was subverted and human rights were violated by this anti-democracy decision. BJP MP blamed former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi of taking such extreme step for political gain.

The BJP MP also hit out at West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for her allegation that country went through Super Emergency in the last five years.

MP Meenakshi Lekhi alleged that the Chief Minister has no right to talk about Emergency as people of West Bengal are witnessing the similar situation in the state under her regime
